DEBORAH MORRIS [1956-].
One of America's leading writers of real-life dramas, Morris has authored over 140
feature magazine articles and 15 books, including Trapped in a Cave! A True Story
(Broadman & Holman/1994); the Middle Reader book series, Real Kids, Real
Adventures (Berkley/1997-1999; Adventure Ink/2000); and the upcoming Young Adult series Teens 911 (HCI/Fall 2002). Her work has been translated into as many as
ten languages and featured in Reader's Digest, Family Circle, Good Housekeeping,
Outdoor Life, Guideposts, and a host of other national and international publications.
She has been quoted extensively in other book-length works: Cause of Death: A
Writer's Guide to Death, Murder & Forensic Medicine (Writer's Digest Books/1992);
Drive The Point Home (Monarch Publications, Great Britain/1994); Comprehension
Exercises for Practice 4 (Shing-Lee Publishing, Singapore/1996); Teaching Your
Child to Write (Berkley Publishing/1997); Making Sense: Skills for Active Readers
(Perfection Learning Corp./1997); Terrific Connections With Authors, Illustrators
and Storytellers (Libraries Unlimited/1999); and others. In addition, she co-authored (ghosted) the
Christian bestseller, What Would Jesus Do? (1994), a contemporary re-telling of
Charles Sheldon's 1894 classic novel, In His Steps. The hardcover novel What Would
Jesus Do? was a Finalist for the 1994 Gold Medallion Award for Fiction. A special
paperback youth edition was released in Fall, 1997.
Morris has been featured in the International Who's Who of Professional and Business Women (American Biographical Institute/2000), the International Authors and Writers Who's Who (IBC, England/ 1999), and Something About the Author (Gale Publishing, 1997). She's been the subject of over 125 newspaper and magazine articles, and has appeared on a variety of TV and radio talk shows throughout the U.S. and Canada. She has co-produced two reality-based television movies: Dancing in the Dark, a 1995 Lifetime Television Production starring Victoria Principal; and Angel Flight Down, a 1996 ABC Production. She is also Creator/Co-Producer of the Emmy nominated Real Kids, Real Adventures TV series based on her book series. The TV series airs in the U.S., Central & South America, and the Caribbean Islands on the Discovery Channel, and in Canada and Europe on Global Television. The series was nominated for an Emmy (2001), won the prestigious Award of Excellence from the Film Advisory Board (2001), and won the Gold Special Jury Award for "Best Creative Drama" from Worldfest International Film Festival (2000).
Deborah Morris is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Writer's Roundtable Conferences. She is a certified First Responder and a Disaster Action Team volunteer with the American Red Cross. She received the Volunteer of the Year Award (2000) from the American Red Cross Dallas Chapter. In her spare time she rides a '98 Harley-Davidson 883 XLH and assists the Christian Motorcyclist Association as a first aid provider. She lives in Garland, Texas, with her husband, three dogs, two parakeets, one hedgehog, one cat, one English house sparrow, and a pink-toed tarantula.
