BLANCO RIVER EXCERPT

Uncle John was leaning out, reaching for the line, when the boat suddenly tilted. They had all been so busy watch the catfish that they hadn't noticed how quickly the next crossing was coming up. This one was a low concrete bridge. In front of it, water was being sucked down into a small, underwater drain, forming a whirlpool. They had drifted right into it.
The next few seconds were a blur. John David's fishing rod flew out of his hands and landed in the water. He was tossed sideways away from the boat. The next thing he knew, he landed with a splash on top of the bridge.
Stunned, he scrambled to his feet. The lid to their ice chest floated past him and was swept under the bridge by the rushing current. What had happened?
"Son, grab hold of me!" Mr. Ruiz's desperate cry snapped the thirteen-year-old out of his confusion. He looked down to see his father clinging to the side of the bridge, his face gray with shock. The inflatable boat was curled around behind him, pinning him against the concrete. His legs, out of sight under the bridge, were caught in the roaring whirlpool. As the water dragged him down, his fingers were slipping down the side of the bridge. He was only seconds from being sucked under.

"One of the most interesting, entertaining, and exceptionally new literary ideas that I've encountered in a long time." (Texas Today Show Host, KNWS-TV)

"You'll want to know what happens next!" (Steve Blow, Dallas Morning News)

"Wholesome and exciting....a series that will make both kids and parents happy!" (ABC Radio)

"'A thrill a minute' is a good way of summing up these exciting stories. Not only do readers get to enjoy adventure-packed stories of real heroes their own age, they are able to learn great lessons on survival techniques that will enable them to be more efficient in any emergency." (Christian Library Journal)

"Author Deborah Morris is a wonderful storyteller, including conversations and events surrounding the actual adventure to let the reader get to know the kids involved." (Mike & Amy Nappa, A Closer Look)

"Young teens who love action and adventure will love these true stories. Each story has the flair of a novel and the excitement of tonight's network news." (Living with Teenagers)

"Great reading for young readers and adults as well." (Librarian's World)

"Morris is a skillful story weaver. In spite of the fact that you know something traumatic is about to happen (or the story wouldn't be in the book), you can't always guess what it will be. Morris' foreshadowing technique is wonderfully subtle." (Minnesota Christian Chronicle.)

"The Real Kids Real Adventures series will restore your faith in America's youngsters.... The stories champion the notion that heroic courage abides in the heart of every child." (Joy Dickinson, Richardson News Book Reviewer)

"The stories are well dramatized....readers will surely catch the excitement, anxiety, and fear each boy feels as he struggles with the unexpected." (Shelley Townsend-Hudson, ALA Booklist)

"Morris retraces the steps of her characters... Each story is the true tale of a child's harrowing experience and how they used their spunk, ingenuity and courage to overcome the odds." (Dallas Child/Fort Worth Child Magazine)

"These adventure tales are real page turners for your children." (Parent Pages)

"Gives kids the chills they desire plus wholesome role models.... The stories are extremely well-written and capture the excitement. The conversational style makes for quick reading." (Katrina Schmitz, Christian Retailing)

"The stories show pre-teens and teens that people just like themselves can be heroes and that real courage comes not from being fearless but from having the faith and determination to act in spite of fear." (C.N., Library Materials Guide)
