".... Entertaining and uplifting, the book is particularly suited to younger teens and would be a fine choice for middle school libraries."

-- Christine Sanderson, VOYA

"Five accounts of teens in emergency situations, in some cases saving the lives of others.... The stories engage readers instantly and are accompanied by small, black-and-white snapshots. All of the teens are introduced in a non-emergency context that defines their unique traits and personality, shedding light on their ability to handle these situations. Reluctant readers who prefer nonfiction will find much to enjoy here, and the survival quizzes are great springboards for discussion in health classes."

Five Stories in One Book...

Snowbound
Fifteen-year-old friends Aaron, Justin, and Van of Spokane, Washington are enjoying a day on the slopes at Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort in Idaho. But in the blowing snow and increasing winds, they take a wrong turn and end up hopelessly lost as a chill darkness falls on the mountain.

Helicopter Crash
Jodi Itri, a thirteen-year-old in Fredericksburg, Texas, is a cop's daughter who's spent many summer nights riding with her dad. Their conversations about how to handle emergencies jolt Jodi into action when her dad's experimental helicopter crashes and leaves him wounded and in shock.

Flameproof
Sixteen-year-old high school wrestler Tony Guzman is a native New Yorker, confident in his ability to take care of himself. Then one morning he's awakened by an odd smell and a flickering light, and realizes that his house is on fire. He can save himself by jumping out the window--but can he leave his eleven-year-old brother and two-year-old sister trapped inside?

River of No Return
The Hall brothers, Randy and Curtis, are well known for fighting in their hometown of Burley, Idaho, so they're unhappy to discover they'll both be sharing a raft with their dad when their Scout troop goes whitewater rafting down the Salmon River. They're far downstream when a violent storm sweeps down on them, blowing their rafts back upstream and sending a boulder crashing down on them. To save their father, the brothers must join forces.

Race to the Finish
Fifteen-year-old Jamie Chavez is a barrel racer on her high school rodeo team in Raton, New Mexico, so she's used to racing against the clock. But the day she discovers the science teacher, Mr. Heuschkel, collapsed behind his desk in full cardiac arrest, she faces the most important race of her lifetime as she uses CPR to circulate oxygen and blood to his brain.

WAKING NIGHTMARE

Justin gasped when the truck pulled up and stopped outside their snow cave. "They've found us!" he said excitedly, straining to sit up. "Look!"
He was angry when Aaron responded by shaking him roughly and yelling: "Snap out of it, Justin! You're seeing things again. You need to wake up."/dd>
Justin blinked in confusion, and the truck disappeared. He felt like crying. "This is a nightmare," he whispered. "I don't want to wake up. Leave me alone."
"No! Move around or you're going to freeze." Aaron's voice was harsh and cracked. For hours he had kept himself awake by thinking about his family and praying. His body was shaking so hard he felt like he was having convulsions. He had removed his gloves, which were soaked through and frozen solid.
Justin and Van had drifted in and out of consciousness, occasionally babbling about needing to do homework or going to the hot tub outside. Every ten or fifteen minutes Aaron shook them awake and made them answer him. He felt bad dragging them back from pleasant dreams of warmth and home, but he was afraid not to.
With hypothermia it was all too easy to drift off to sleep and never wake up.
