Crushed by a Car
Gordon, Omar, Shuggie, Tamika and Raymond, ages eight through thirteen, were playing outside with Raymond’s new Christmas basketball when they heard cries for help--coming from the elderly neighbor who always yelled at them for trampling her flowers. When they realized that the woman’s son was trapped under a car which had fallen off its jack, the five kids worked together to physically lift the 2500-pound car off the man’s chest.

A THUNDEROUS NOISE

"So we're dumping all the dirt into the garbage bin?" Christopher stood in the garage, cradling a lumpy bag of garden soil in his arms. He had changed into a green golf shirt that his mother liked. He planned to ruin it before the day was out.
His grandfather nodded. "It'll be easier than carrying the bags out one by one."
"I'm all for easier," Christopher said. He ripped open his bag and began to shake the dirt into the bin. His grandfather patted his shoulder, then bent to pick up another bag.
"Papa, let me do that. You know you shouldn't be lifting something that heav--"
KA-BOOOM! An earsplitting noise drowned out Christopher's words, even his thoughts. To his astonishment, the garbage bin seemed to explode in front of him, blowing the dirt up into his face. Above him, the roof of the garage popped open like the top of a jack-in-the-box, then came crashing back down at an odd angle. Christopher caught a glimpse of his grandfather a few feet away. The old man's shirt was dirt spattered, his face gray with shock.
The next few seconds seemed to pass in slow motion. As the thunderous noise went on, the floor beneath their feet began to tremble. Screwdrivers, hammers, and other tools clattered off their racks and rained down on them. Christopher tried to scream, but his mouth was full of mud. The deafening rumble made his chest vibrate.
"Papa!" he finally sputtered. He took a stumbling step forward, then watched in horror as a thick wood beam swung down from the ceiling--and hit the back of his grandfather's head.

"Morris' edge-of-your-seat drama and camera-eye description gets kids to flip the page instead of the remote." (Dallas Child Editor Marissa Trevino)

"The Real Kids Real Adventures series will restore your faith in America's youngsters.... The stories champion the notion that heroic courage abides in the heart of every child." (Joy Dickinson, Richardson News Book Reviewer)
